How to tutorials on setting up and configuring a web server with open source software.

The at command allows you to execute a command or a set of commands at a defined time. It is similar to a cron job except it is used for running the command or task just once.

Having clean URLs for you wordpress website helps your visitors navigate your site easier as well as improve Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In this tutorial we will look at how to set this up on your WordPress site running on an Ubuntu server.

Here is an example. You can see the page URL is /?page_id=4

In this tutorial we cover how to install and configure WordPress on a Ubuntu server. I will assume you already have Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP), and phpMyAdmin running on your Ubuntu machine.

PhpMyAdmin is a great easy to use web admin interface for your mysql databases. The one down side is it can be a security threat. Seems like many bots on the internet just go looking for phpmyadmin installed on web servers. Then run automated attacks.

If you have logwatch installed you may often see many failed attemtps.

In this tutorial we will have a quick look at the apachtop command. This is great for monitoring your webserver in a terminal or while SSHed into your system.

What is ApacheTop:

It is defined as a Realtime Apache monitoring tool. It basically watches your log files in realtime and displays the output. This can be real handy for trouble shooting as well as keeping an eye on what files are being accesses at that time.

Note: Changing your default ssh port does not guarantee that you won't get hacked. How ever changing the default really helps cut down on the attempts. Please make sure you have other secure practices in place such as strong passwords.

In today’s tough economy, companies are always looking for ways to cut cost. One of the first things that gets cut are valuable employees. In the mean time many companies and governments are spending insane amounts of money in maintenance and upgrades of software. Then when the next update comes out they spend that money all over again.

When I redesigned a site that was running on Joomla I had an issue with trying to get my old URLs to point at the new URL. I didn't want the site to lose ranking in the search engine or have any broken links to this site.

Often when you setup multiple websites on a single web server it can be difficult to figure out what database your Joomla site is using. Some times admins get lazy and create poor names or a hosting provider may just give you a random generated database name. In this tutorial we will look at four different methods on how to find the database name of your Joomla site.

If you are looking for information on what is the mysql database username and password are set to, use the "Find Your Joomla Database Name and Login Information with SSH:" steps below.

(Note: Joomla 1.7 was used in the following examples. The same steps should apply to other versions as well.)

In this tutorial we will cover how to start, stop, and restart Apache and MySQL on CentOS. Since CentOS is used mostly for a server we will do these steps all at the command line (terminal). We will also use another command to check the status of the services to make sure they are really up or down. Let's get started!
