I originally wrote an article on how to map a network drive using Ubuntu. Since then things have really changed in the Linux desktop world. Gnome 3 has been released and Ubuntu has moved away from Gnome and switched to Unity as their primary desktop environment.

By default Gnome 3 hides the shutdown option in the menu and only shows suspend as an option. To shutdown you need to hold down ALT to show the shutdown option in the status bar.

With Gnome 3 there are a few extra steps you need to take when to launch a terminal.

 

Slide you mouse in the upper left corner (Activities)
