Sometimes you may want to use a different DNS server then the one that is handed out from your networks DHCP server. You can manually set this and the search domain in Microsoft Windows 7 by adjusting your network card settings.  In this tutorial we will walk through manually setting DNS servers in Windows 7.

 

Sometimes you want to find how long a desktop or server has been running. A example is if you are having troubles with a system rebooting at random. To find out how long a windows machine has been powered on you can run a simple command.Steps below will work for Windows xp, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

 

 

Often when you setup multiple websites on a single web server it can be difficult to figure out what database your Joomla site is using. Some times admins get lazy and create poor names or a hosting provider may just give you a random generated database name. In this tutorial we will look at four different methods on how to find the database name of your Joomla site.

Google Chrome Browser can be installed on just about any Operating System such as Linux, Mac or Windows.  It has a lot of great features built in out of the box. These are just a few of my favorite that most people don't know about.

   

Windows 7 and Windows Vista hide the Run option in the start menu by default. I know that you can use the Search Programs and Files feild but I preffer to have it visable in my start menu. To find your IP address on a Windows computer go to Start > Run (You can also use the keyboard short cut windows + "R")

You can setup network share on a Linux server using samba or just setup a shared drive on a windows machine. This will allow you to have a central place to store files and easly share them with other computer on the network. In this tutorial we will assume the network share is already setup.

 

What is a MAC Address?

You can think of a MAC address as a serial number for your network card. It is a unique six two-digits hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. It is used for routing traffic on a network.

The other day I was helping a friend with a reporting tool he was using. He mentioned that the application was really slow when loading data. The application he was running had log files that where populated into a directory. When the application would try and grab new data it had to go through all the files.

 

In this example we will  setup a shared drive on a home computer. This will allow us to share files between multiple computers and devices on the network. This can be great for sharing files as well as setup a single point to manage and update files.

 

In this example I am running Ubuntu 7.10 but this should work the same way in more updated releases such as Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 or Ubuntu 11.04 (Unity). The Terminal Server application is installed by default, so this makes things very simple.
